Thumbs up for Citizenship!

My school community is campaigning against a suggestion from the secretary of education Michael Gove, to remove citizenship from the national curriculum. For those who are unaware of what citizenship is, it is a subject that teaches a variety of topics that can be very useful in daily life, such as rights and responsibilities, racial harmony, globalization, politics and the media etc. I especially believe that citizenship is essential for the youth of today; as many do not pay attention to any form of news resulting in a lack of knowledge about important current affairs happening in the world. This could be detrimental to both the curriculum and the future generations.

In our campaign we performed four different methods. We wrote to our local MP and the citizenship foundation addressing our issue and if they were willing to support it. The citizenship foundation kindly responded confirming that they were very pleased to see that we are taking productive action. We also individually carried out a petition in which we asked friends, family and even strangers to sign in support of citizenship staying on the national curriculum which was then sent to the House of parliament. After these three methods we then contacted the man himself, Michael Gove via letter, addressing our issue and in hopeful persuasion of his suggestion.

We hope by carrying out this campaign people understand that citizenship is fundamental and vital to the future generations in order for our society to grow into becoming more informed and responsible communities.

Kony 2012!

From twitter to Tumblr, over this past week I have been coming across tweets and posts about ‘Kony 2012’ and Invisible children’s plan to make him famous; but who is Kony and why is everyone obsessing over him?

Well, Joseph Kony is the leader of the a rebel group named the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) originally based in northern Uganda. He firmly holds first place of the world’s worst war criminals list. It is led to believe that Kony forces children to perform evil deeds by abducting them from their homes to become soldiers in his army or ‘wives’ for his officers, forcing them to mutilate civilians body parts and in some cases forcing them to murder their own parents. The LRA began performing these duties in Northern Uganda over thirty years ago but only left for good in 2006. Unfortunately, by 2008 they had brought their attacks to the border regions of north-eastern Congo, South Sudan and Central African Republic and have reportedly recently changed their tactics now that they know great power is after them.

Invisible Children Inc. is this great power. It is a charity organisation planning to capture and arrest Kony in 2012! As many people are unaware of Kony’s unlawful deeds, the charity believe that, in order for their plan to come to pass they need to make him famous; and not famous to celebrate him, but to raise awareness about his corrupt schemes and to gain international support.

As Kony 2012 is the first project Invisible children Inc. has worked on, there are a number of people who feel a sense of distrust towards the organisation and many other valid points that influence others not to donate or show support. However, I have to stress my opinion in that knowing you have donated to a cause which could potentially save someone’s life, plainly outweighs not donating because of the ‘fear’ of wasting your money. In either case the choice is yours; give in which you gain the feeling of hope for a better world or risk, knowing that you could have helped to save a child’s life?

Until my next post, stay blessed and remember…. Make Kony Famous!

2011- What A Year!

So it’s come to that time again when we are entering a New Year; where we set New Year resolutions and dwell on all the things that we have accomplished throughout the last 12 months. As we look back on 2011 we recognise that it was an extraordinary period; from the Japan earthquake to the Arab Spring, 2011 has flooded us with a series of events, many of which were unfortunate.

With the story of the Tunisian protestor setting himself on fire due to a high percentage of unemployment and other government downfalls wide-spreading the news, we had quite a negative start to the year. This particular story line was talked about for months and lead to a franchise of protests, riots and other similar events across the Middle East and Northern Africa all through 2011, including the killing of Colonel Gadaffi.

Followed by the start of the Arab spring, was the Northern Japan earth quake with the magnitude of 9.0 along with a tsunami at a shallow depth of 20 miles underneath the surface of the Pacific Ocean. According to the National Police Agency of Japan a total of 15,842 people have died, 5,890 were injured, and 3,485 are still missing. This data was collected in September 2011.

However, April brought us a more positive vibe with Prince William and Princess Catherine’s wedding taking place on the 29th. This was a special day for both the couple and the congregation as people all over the world watched the process of them exchanging vows and becoming one. This wonderful event was celebrated through street parties and a day off work!

A few months later in July, the tragic death of Amy Winehouse occurred, leaving many people in shock and saddened, whilst others were pessimistic towards the news. In the same month the international phone hacking scandal accusation, involving the news of the world and other British tabloid newspapers took place. This was another trial that shadowed over a long period and is most likely not to be forgotten.

August was probably the most eventful month of the year. With many innocent people being made homeless and countless stores being looted, London was almost comparable to a war zone. These events were so critical that it lead to prisons becoming full and provoked David Cameron to make a resentful speech about the topic. Fortunately by September the riots had calmed down and there were no more buildings getting damaged or looted.

So we have made it! We have left 2011 and as we approach the new year despite the ‘end of the world’ rumours, I strongly urge you to look at high hope for 2012 and if you have any new years resolutions try your best to keep up with them, so that around this time next year you can proudly say you have fulfilled them.

Happy New Year and God bless!

Reckless Riots!

Between 6th - 10th August 2011 there have been several cases of riots in and a few outside London. The first scenario of these hectic events happened in Tottenham, but what excuse do the follow-up riots hold?

The Tottenham riot occurred on 5th August 2011. The spark that had started this fire was 29-year-old Mark Duggan who was, 10 days before the Tottenham event, shot dead by the police without explanation to the victims loved ones. This formed, what started off as a peaceful protest, into a hectic riot. In this riot many innocent peoples houses were damaged and some even destroyed, leaving victims distraught and homeless. This North London incident led to a franchise of riots and looting over the next couple of days.

But were all the riots based on this case? Four participants of the following riots tell us the answer to this misled question. These young men inform sky news in an interview that they were looting for their own benefit. However, there is more to the connotation; one of the teenagers said that they were looting to survive and ‘not for the fun of it’ another said they were doing it to provide for their son, this same culprit later on said that they believe that inequality is one of the main causes of this crisis.

At the end of the interview it was clear that these adolescents did not feel a hint of shame or guilt from their actions, apart from the fact that their parents could be watching their interview on television.

I understand how the tree of inequality has an effect in both the Tottenham and the subsequent incidents; as financial difficulties and risky government decisions branch off this unfair tree, it has become much harder to find equality, especially for those who are in the middle and lower class segment. However is this a good enough reason for theft and damaging innocent victims properties? Of course not! In my opinion no matter what background you are coming from; if you want something you should work for it regardless of the time it takes. Certainly there will be people who have an easier route through life, but that’s part of life, isn’t it? Accept the truth and keep trying; after all, taking the harder road in life makes you the stronger person!

Work Experience - WOW what an experience!

Hi Guys…

Recently I experienced a week of work, and guess where I worked… The Voice Newspaper, working as the perfect and ambition job of a journalist. During this amazing experience, I developed many useful skills and am very grateful that my mentor was able to find me this wonderful opportunity. I am also thankful to my employer who accepted me to take on the trustworthy job, and I am even more pleased that she was generous enough to publish all of my written articles both online and in the newspaper! - (Two links to the articles are referenced at the bottom).

Throughout this experience I learnt that the well-known quote ‘It’s about who you know and not what you know’, is truein some circumstances. In which case I will be sure to make the appropriate links for guidance for my soon-to-end journey to become a journalist!
